Section 7-1 Exponential Functions
Remember when you are graphing these equations, you use the points (0,1), (-1,1/b), & (1,b).
(b is the base)
Transformations: the h which is found in the exponent shifts the x value and the stretch factor or (a) and then the k which is typically found at the end of the equation transforms the y values. Remember to multiply the y before you add or subtract.(order of operations!)
Exponential growth has a base or b value of 1 or greater and Decay has a base or b value found between 0 & 1.
Do numbers 13 & 21 on page 456 to check for understanding. The answers are in the back of the book.
Section 7-2 Solving Exponential Equations & Inequalities
The main thing to remember here is that you need a common base. Check Youtube look up exponential functions-The Organic Chemistry Tutor does a nice job. Try problems 9,11,25 & 29, on page 464 to check your understanding.
Section 7-3 Logarithms & Logarithmic Functions
This section is on graphing logs. The points to use in this case are the inverse of exponential graphs. Use (1,0), (b,1), (1/b,-1). The shift or transformation rules are the same. Also take a look at how to write equations in exponential form or logarithmic. Give problems 1,3,25,27,37,39, & 43 a try. These are on page 472 and the answers can be found in the back of the book.
7-4 Section Solving Logarithmic Equations & Inequalities
Read through this section. Remember that you must test your values when dealing with inequalities to find the boundaries. Try problems 9,11,15,25 & 33 on pages 480-1. Check your answers.
When you have competed this, send me clarifying questions – if you have any. Typing the exponents & bases in is a problem so I will be hand writing the lessons from here on out. You should still use you textbook as a reference.
